My first BAeA contest was 40 years ago in September 1984 at Lt Snoring, flying a CASA Jungmann with 125hp engine. I placed 5th 🙂 At no time did I contemplate today that many years ago.
Just 2 weeks ago at the beginners aeros contest we host at Gransden annually, Jamie Williams badgers me and then Melanie Astles into entering the British aerobatics open championships at freestyle.
My last contest I flew was the World Championships in 2009 when I placed 10th overall at Silverstone some 15 years previously. Since then I have concentrated on flying international airshows around the world. Australia, India, China, Malaysia, Philippines and Bahrain to name a few major events.
Reading a fixed sequence thats very complex and fast moving is a skill I’ve lost in those 15 years I found. The last 2 mins was “winging it” because I got lost on the paper ! 🙂
The David Perrin trophy is awarded to the highest placed UK national, the last time I won that was 20 years ago.
I must congratulate the new BAeA officers in the progressive approach taken to contest flying, the web site, the format and huge enthusiasm I see for the association. Not forgetting to mention the IT skills in the management team.
Immediately after the contest flights were flown I departed to Chamonix arriving at the same time as prise giving some 4 hours later. Sorry I was not there for the prize giving, it does bug me and I don’t mean to disrespect my fellow competitors or the organisers, it was pre planed to be in Chamonix that evening for which I delayed departure enabling my entry.
